On behalf of the UK BIM Alliance

We learned recently of the sudden passing of Richard Petrie, Chief Executive of buildingSMART International.  Richard was much more than this – he was also a key member of our Strategic Advisory Group and contributed much to the Alliance governance through his wise words based upon decades of experience.  At an individual level, Richard was always forthcoming and willing to advise, whilst also being stern enough to ‘make it tough’ where needed, to galvanise people into action.

He is already missed and his influence on the Alliance has set us in good stead for the future.

We send our sincere condolences to his family and friends.

On behalf of buildingSMART UK & Ireland

Hearing of Richard’s passing was met with great sadness by the buildingSMART UK & Ireland Chapter committee and all those who knew him.

His regular guidance during the recent resurgence of the Chapter has been significant, well-considered and always supportive and encouraging; enabling us to grow and align with the other global chapters.

I hope we’ve made you proud Richard.

Richard’s work at an international level has professionalised the organisation and helped bring the global AECO industry together using a common data language – a huge achievement.  He not only took forward buildingSMART to become a serious player in digital construction but provided constant encouragement and help to many individuals.

He will be missed and fondly remembered for the mark he has left as a legacy to our industry.
